This is wrecking my head.... so this is worth a pint to the answerer! (I might be able to throw in a bag of crisps as well)

My customer has SBS 2003 Std (OEM and not R2) and is looking at CRM 4.

2 Questions - software and hardware.

1) Software:
CRM 4 needs SQL 2005 and SQL reporting services.
a) Is SQL Workgroup edition (ie as in SBS 2003 R2 Premium) sufficient?
b) Are they losing out by not using SQL 2005 Std?
c) How can I upgrade them to SBS 2003 R2 Premium?
Do I also need to upgrade their CALs?

2) Hardware:
There are about 10 SBS users and the plan is to have 3-5 CRM users. There is also exchange antispam and antivirus installed but I don't imagine that the server is extremely busy. The server spec is ok - Xeon 3G, 2GB, RAID 5 with 10K disks and 90GB free space.
a) Is this sufficient?
b) should we be looking at a 2nd server? (adds a lot of cost)

We would upgrade the current server with another 2GB and maybe a 2nd CPU...

Many many thanks

Ivan

Hi Ivan,

I have CRM 4 running here on SBS R2 Premium with no issues.
I would recommend the Maximum 4GB of RAM, and the big thing with CRM is the disk IOs, the faster the RAID controller the better. Helps to speed up the IO requests.
Add a second processor only if you have a medium to heavy load on the server already.
You might think about getting two 15K drives and putting the CRM and SQL on that to improve performance.

It is possible to get the upgrade to Premium, just not sure if you have to upgrade to R2 at the same time, addding extra cost.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2003/sbs/howtobuy/pricing.mspx
This link shows the part numbers to do the upgrade from SBS 2003 Std to SBS R2 Premium
SBS 2003 CALs do not need to be upgraded if you go to R2.
With R2 that includes the rights to access SQL Workgroup, where if you go with SQL Std you will either have to buy the CALs or a processor license to be compliant.
The next thing is to be careful with CRM pricing Workgroup Edition is only upto 5 users, if you need to upgrade to a 6th user you have upgrade to professional and expect a serious price to do that.

David
PS I am getting OEM information for you about the second server.
